The Salopian Poetry Society was formed in 1976 and is based in the County of Shropshire.
Welcome to our website one and all; we hope you like it and that, by joining this Society of around 150 members, you will enjoy their poems in our quarterly magazines and entertain us with some of your own poetic pearls.
The Society exists to encourage lovers of poetry to become poets themselves, by publishing their work alongside poems by established poets, in our quarterly magazine 'Salopeot'. Over the years we have been proud to follow the progress of our members as their poetry has improved and they have won prizes in our own and other poetry competitions.
In March 2015, Sir Michael Leighton, of Loton Park, Alberbury, Shropshire, a published poet in a line of family poets, graciously agreed to serve as our President.
An 'open' poetry competition has been run every year since 1976
and our 40th such competition is now closed to entries.
The competition was judged by independent adjudicator Alison Chisholm, who is an award winning poet, has published eleven collections of poetry, the poetry correspondence course of The Writers Bureau and textbooks on various aspects of poetry. She has taught poetry to adults for the past 30 years and gives courses, workshops and readings around Britain and overseas.
In 2014 all of the winning poems were by non-members of the Society.
Last year (2015) nine of the thirteen winners were by non-members.
This year (2016) only four of the thirteen winners were members.
Details of our 2017 competition will be available here soon.
Poems may be submitted to the competition without an entry form provided the rules are adhered to and the information requested on the entry form is supplied.
Poems may be submitted on-line and payment made direct to our Bank - see competition entry form.
